Well… Where to start. I am really annoyed that after two good performances we have lost both by the same score line and ended up with nil points just like Eurovision.
It leaves us in the almost impossible scenario where Italy have to WIN against Costa Rica and Uruguay and we have to beat Costa Rica and maybe by a score line to have a better goal difference. Being very optimistic here but actually that doesn’t sound too impossible because Italy should win their games to come first in the group and we should beat Costa Rica comfortably.
About the match itself, well, I thought Rooney was our best player which is good for his confidence, especially getting his first ever World Cup goal. But overall it was down to one special man called Luis Suarez. He is a different class to any England player and was the difference between the sides. Looking back our best chances were Rooney’s free kick, his header which hit the post from less than one yard and one which was saved.
I personally think Barkley should have started instead of Welbeck who was poor. Sterling wasn’t as good as he was against Italy and Sturridge dived a lot (almost more than Suarez). Gerrard and Henderson were very average and perhaps Wilshere should have started or come on to add some much needed urgency.
The defence was very average and got exposed many times with Suarez and Cavani. Baines was good going forward and Johnson set up the goal but the centre backs (Jagielka and Cahill) were struggling a lot as would most against Suarez. Joe Hart was very shaky as well throughout the match but there wasn’t much he could do to deny both the goals.
When England got the goal I really thought we would win with all the momentum going for us. But perhaps we should have gone for the draw a bit more instead of going all attack which cost us when they caught us out on the break.
Did you notice who headed the ball onto Suarez? Perhaps Stevie G saw Suarez and forgot what team he was on!
Very down, but still not quite technically out. Is this the end of our World Cup dream? It would be the first time since 1958 that we wouldn’t get past the group stage. It seems strange saying this but Come On Italy!
