Round of 16 day 4 – Argentina and Belgium

Well… What a round of 16

It turned out that all the winners in the group stages won which must be quite rare. The majority of the games have gone to extra time with a goalless score line in normal time due to tiredness and the heat and it was no different for the last two games.

Argentina v Switzerland was a very tight game with the Swiss mainly defending and surrounding the best player in the world Messi as you should and it seemed to work as Messi had no help from his team mates and the game went to extra time. Extra time was no different and the game look destined to go to penalties.

But then there was an angel that came from nowhere, not an actual angel but Angel Di Maria for Argentina. Who had had the worst game of his career according to the pundits on BBC, but he didn’t let his performance effect him and he scored the crucial goal right at the end of extra time to break Swiss hearts and send Argentina through to the quarter finals.

The other game had much more excitement with the young Belgium taking on the surprise package of the tournament USA who finally look like they have figured out how to play Soccer. The game again was goalless but it wasn’t a dull 0-0 and went to extra time.

Belgium then came alive and struck early on in extra time with a goal and then followed with another soon after to make it 2-0 making it very unlikely for the game to go to penalties once again. But this was not any normal USA team and they had plenty of spirit to pull a goal back and then had the chances to draw level but they just couldn’t do it.

Much praise for USA who have really improved and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are real contenders for the World Cups to come. This isn’t good news for other countries because then they will be dominant in every sport! Also special mention to Tim Howard who was a hero for them and kept them in the game with 16 saves which is the most since 1966.

Overall, the round of 16 was great with plenty of drama from the introduction of extra time and penalties and I can’t wait for more from the quarter finals!
