Transfers are usually never as good in the World Cup year because there is less time for the business to be done but this year has gone completely against that theory.
Regarding my team, Arsenal, times have definitely changed for us now that we have paid off our stadium’s debt. Having been a selling club for the last few seasons – selling our best players including Van Persie, Fabregas, Nasri, Song and others – we are now finally able to compete financially with the other teams in the league. This was shown last season as well with our record signing Mesut Ozil costing £40million. Our previous record signing was worth £15million so we absolutely smashed that by more than doubling it.
This year we have continued to show our financial strength by buying another marquee signing. This time it is Chile and Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez for £30 million. I am definitely pleased with this as we really needed a fast forward as another option to Giroud. Our other signing was French international right back Mathieu Debuchy in a like for like replacement for the reliable Bacary Sagna. Both good signings and I think there will be a few others to follow including Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina to replace Fabianski and challenge Szczesny, along with defensive midfielder Sami Khedira from Real Madrid. If we can get these then it will be a great transfer window for Arsenal and I think we will be able to really challenge for trophies next season to add to our much needed FA cup success last season.
We have also sold Bendtner and Park which was definitely much needed in terms of wasted wages!
