Christmas Day for all football fans! It is always full of drama and it didn’t disappoint this time either. Everyone is always glued to the TV until the 11pm deadline which usually is extended to the early morning!
There was one name in particular that was the stand out star on deadline day and that is Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. He had been rumoured throughout the previous week to be on the move from Monaco but many papers said he was going to Real Madrid. He even tweeted apparently that it was his dream to go to Madrid.
At the start of the day all the papers were talking about him maybe coming to the Premier League with Manchester City, United or Arsenal all interested but in the end only one prevailed.
Manchester United who had already spent a lot in the window with players such as Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera in the new era of Louis Van Gaal were the winners of his signature.
He joined them in the end after their extension on a season long loan deal with the option to buy him next summer which they probably will so it was an amazing capture by them and stole all the headlines.
I personally think they needed a quality defender or centre midfielder but they obviously just couldn’t turn down the opportunity to sign someone like him. The question is though is how Van Gaal is going to play everyone in his formation with the likes of Van Persie, Rooney and Mata.
Being an Arsenal fan it was very annoying to hear because Falcao is exactly what we needed after the serious injury to Olivier Giroud. He is a world class striker with proven quality in Europe but I think his wages were the problem for us and Wenger was apparently in Rome referring a charity match so I don’t think he was interested in him that much!
Regarding Arsenal, we desperately needed a striker to replace the injured Giroud and with better quality than Yaya Sanogo who just isn’t good enough at this moment in time. I actually think that even if we didn’t sign a striker we should play Joel Campbell who I spoke about in one of my blogs at the World Cup or when Theo Walcott comes back he can play there and obviously Alexis (Sanchez) as well.
Having said that though we still needed someone and with Falcao going to United , we out of nowhere went in for Man United and England international Danny Welbeck for a fee of around £16million.
This is good and bad for Arsenal in my opinion because he is definitely better than Sanogo at the moment and has proven quality but he wasn’t the world class striker that we wanted/needed even if we have Giroud. Someone like Falcao or Cavani would have been perfect but obviously Wenger wasn’t interested and didn’t want to spend that amount of money!
Welbeck who is still only 23 , is definitely a good player though and I felt he wasn’t given enough game time at United and if he can play a few games up front for us then who knows what could happen! It was also a strange move by Man United to sell to a rival like we did for Van Persie. He will add skill and much needed speed to our attack though and I think overall he is a good signing and importantly adds to our British core. By coming to Arsenal he has also managed to get champions league football with Man United not even in Europa League.
The transfer window as a whole has been crazy with a staggering £800 million plus spent which is the record. Man United spent the most (£150m) followed by Liverpool, with Arsenal spending their most ever by a long way in the region of £80million in the end. I think it has been a great transfer window for us with marquee signing Alexis coming in along with Debuchy, Ospina, Chambers and now Welbeck but I still think we need a top class striker, a defensive midfielder and another centre back.
Bring on the January transfer window!
