It’s the same old story…
Once again we find ourselves in the last 16, but once again we finished second in group and so would face one of the bigger teams in the draw.
When in the past we have come second it has been due to our own mistakes but I think this time we deserved to finish behind worthy winners Bayern Munich. Group winners Chelsea and Man City were also looking to avoid a hard draw with PSG and Juventus the best runners up.
So once again we were vulnerable to draw a tough opponent. These included holders Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. But there was also Wolfsburg and Zenit who were definitely the easier teams. Having said that we drew Monaco last year and still lost so no team is easy.
So the draw was announced and I was hoping for the best but football is a cruel sport!
I would have backed us against any of the teams apart from one and, you’ve guessed it, we got that one. Giants Barcelona who we have faced and lost to a few times in recent seasons, just our luck. The front three of Messi, Neymar and Suarez would make anyone scared as well as having a great team. It was definitely the hardest team we could have got and we got them. Typical.
What makes things worse is that the two worst group winners got favourable draws in Wolfsburg playing against Gent and Zenit playing against Benfica. This means that there will be weaker teams in the quarters. Juventus also got Bayern Munich which is another big draw compared to the others.
Chelsea also got the hardest runner up in PSG who they lost to last year at the same time. So they will be looking to get revenge there and Man City finally got a easier draw by getting Dynamo Kyiv.
Real Madrid should beat Roma and Atletico should beat PSV in the other games in what concludes a great draw. Not if you are an Arsenal fan obviously!
The games will be played in February so hopefully we will have our players back from injury and play Barcelona with our best team and really go for it. As you know in football anything can happen.
Come on Arsenal!
