Following a bad run of form (not winning in our last three league games) we really needed to pick up three points to stay at the top of the table.
After the FA Cup win we had our usual team back and the returning players just need game time now.
Having been destroyed by Southampton in the reverse fixture this was always going to be a tough game but we should have won it.
However Southampton are certainly no pushover as we soon found out in the game. They defended in numbers and England international Forster kept them in the game throughout.
Özil had a great chance in the first half and we had other chances that we should have taken but the finishing wasn’t quite there and Forster made a few good saves.
The final score was 0-0 and it meant another two points dropped. What made matters worse was that all the other teams around us at the top won their respective games so we are now 4th (our traditional position!)
However it is still all to play for and we are only 5 points behind Leicester at the top who we are going to play soon.
After this poor run though it does mean that we need to start winning again if we are going to win the title.
Next stop is the south coast for the Bournemouth game – let’s hope it is the start of a winning run!
