After the disappointing first game of the season defeat to Liverpool we desperately needed to bounce back against champions Leicester. It wasn’t going to be an easy game but we did beat them in both games last year including a 5-2 win away from home.
Xhaka started his first game and there was great news as star defender Koscielny returned to the heart of the defence partnering youngster Holding. On the Leicester side they had Mahrez and Vardy who had both been linked with moving to us. Did they make the wrong decision?
The game was end to end and had many chances but neither team could break the deadlock and were frustrated. Leicester had two strong penalty claims and I think we got lucky in the end to come away with a 0-0 draw. It probably was the fair result but on another day we could have easily lost our first two games of the season.
On the positive side I thought our defence was a lot better which wasn’t that hard after the first game but Holding and Koscielny looked very good together and I think Holding has a lot of potential. Koscielny who is the captain in Mertesacker’s absence made a huge difference to the side and we will need him to stay fit to stand any chance of winning the league.
Just like with the first game where it was clear that we needed a centre back in this game it was clear that we needed a striker so perhaps losing points would actually benefit us the the long term?
So 1 point from 2 games but they are tough games to start a season with. We need to pick up our first win though in the next game against Watford otherwise Wenger will be under more pressure (as if he doesn’t have enough already!)
