Autumn Arsenal Summary!

In the words of Arsene Wenger ‘Well er… look er…’ it’s been a while since I last properly published a blog but I do have a valid reason for it!

I have been at university studying sports journalism since late September and have had the time of my life! It has been an experience to say the least but I haven’t had much time to write blogs.

In this time though I have been to two football matches including Hastings United and Eastbourne Borough and had to write a match report for the following day. I have also obviously been following Arsenal and other sporting events and have had articles published on the uni’s website.

My last proper blog on Arsenal was when we beat Hull away and I did a preview before the Spurs game (still the only Arsenal game I have seen this season!) So since then Arsenal have done surprisingly well being unbeaten in the league and Champions league as well as picking up wins in the EFL cup.

We are now out of the EFL Cup after losing to Southampton 2-0 at home but I for one didn’t really care that much about it and want us to focus on the main competitions.

We are second in the league and 3 points behind leaders Chelsea who we beat on my first day at university which was definitely a good ice breaker! In this time we have been unbeaten and produced some quality performances. The Chelsea game was probably our best performance followed by our most recent league win against West Ham where newly converted striker Alexis Sanchez got a hat trick.

In the Champions league we have been unbeaten as well and we actually finished top of the group for the first time for a few years. This should give us an easier team in the knockout stage but knowing Arsenal we will probably get Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or another tough team that finished second.

Standout players have been Alexis Sanchez, who has really adapted well playing as a striker this season. He has scored 11 goals in the league and is joint top scorer with he that shall not be named! He was so good against West Ham that he reminded me of Luis Suarez in his prime and we really need him to stay fit to stand any chance of winning the title.

Mesut Özil has also been in good form scoring a hat trick against Ludogorets in the champions league and he also got arguably our best goal of the season against them in the reverse fixture. Another player that has impressed me is Mustafi and his partnership with Koscielny has been really good.

New signing Granit Xhaka has had a slow start but he has still produced some good performances including two great long range goals. Our other new signing Lucas Perez has also taken some time to adapt but he did score a hat trick against Basel in the Champions league which is no mean feat.

Theo Walcott has also been very good at times as well he just needs to be more consistent still. We have however been struck with our injury curse though as Bellerin and Cazorla are both out and we have missed them a lot. November was also once again a poor month for us in terms of points as we drew too many games. Having said that though they were tough games including Spurs, Man United and PSG.

So in summary it has been a decent autumn going onto winter for us being unbeaten in the league and champions league and if we can keep up the good form then who knows what will happen this season. As an Arsenal fan though I know not to get too excited as it usually goes wrong after the new year.

Will it be diferent this season? Will we finally win the league? Will Wenger end on a high?
