The news that Arsenal fans have been waiting for was finally announced today. Lyon and French international striker Lacazette is now an Arsenal player and have we finally found a striker who will score 20+ goals every season?
Lacazette is our record signing costing £46.5 million (which will rise to £52.6 million with add-ons) overtaking Özil who cost 42.4 million and he has a lot to live up to. Hopefully he won’t be the same as Torres was for Chelsea and others who have not performed under a sizeable price tag.
The deal might have never even happened had Atletico Madrid not been banned in the transfer window. Their loss is our gain though and it also means that Man United won’t sign Griezmann which makes the signing that much better!
He will now travel with the Arsenal team to Australia for their pre-season tour and will hopefully make his home debut at the Emirates Cup later this month.
The 26 year old’s goal scoring record in Ligue 1 was very good last season scoring 28 goals in 30 games. He finished with 100 Ligue 1 goals in total and scored 91 over the last four seasons (more than any other player in the division).
Lacazette also scored 37 goals in 45 games for Lyon in all competitions. Only Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez and a few others better his goal scoring stats and his shot conversion rate was the second best of any player in Europe’s top five leagues. He certainly performed better than our current strikers at Arsenal but he was in a so called easier league and the Premier League should be a lot tougher for him.
Will he suit the Premier League? Only time will tell but Wenger has certainly made us Arsenal fans wait for a big striker (a few years) and Lacazette could finally be the player to replace Van Persie and Henry!
What now for Arsenal? Will we sign anyone else? French duo Mbappe and Lemar look unlikely now (they really would have been dream signings) as Monaco are asking for a lot of money. Mahrez has been heavily linked once again but do we really need him? I’m not sure if he would fit in especially if we stick with the same formation (3,4,3) that worked so well at the end of last season.
Surely we have to sell players as we now have a very big squad and I can’t see everyone staying. Lucas Perez for example is someone who will probably leave along with others. I think Giroud and Welbeck will stay but there will be a lot of competition now up front which is good and what you need in a top team. It will be very interesting to see how Wenger will manage all the players next season.
The big question now is if Alexis Sanchez will stay. Many reports are saying that he will, so that’s more good news for us and if he does we should have a very good attack next season with Özil and Lacazette next to him.
So Lacazette is an Arsenal player but how well will he do? Will he prove his worth by being our top scorer and most importantly help us to win the Premier League?
